Very much alt-history, this suspenseful tale keeps you guessing at every turn. The characters are very unique and complex, so much so, that you would almost believe that they were real. This is one tale that doesn't disappoint.
"The Last Ride of the Bastard Machine" is an adrenaline-fueled, action-packed alternative history tale with heavy influences of dieselpunk aesthetics.
If Quentin Tarantino directed his own version of Phillip K Dick's "Man in the High Castle" this story could easily be among the blood soaked highlights.
Niel Michael Burke does a great job of giving the leading couple their own voices as they race to the end of a road against certain death.
Although occasionally repetitive in language and containing German phrasing which could baffle more casual readers, overall this is an amazing story that is well worth the cost to enjoy!
I thought I was buying a novel. Instead got maybe 20 pages. False advertising. Don't make my mistake. I did like what was there.
Did not realize it was just a short story designed to get you to buy the series.
No-stop action with a ending that keeps me wanting more.
A fun ride through alternate histories, where New York has been captured by Nazis and a few good ass kickers must get to the other side. Action-packed Nazi-fighting mayhem ensues. Recommended for those who like alternate history, pulp fiction, and high action.
Burke knows how to write an action scene! I could see every detail as his small band of rebels attempts to break through a huge contingent of Nazis surrounding their hideout.
And the "Bastard Machine" is certainly that--a Model A, modified and armored beyond recognition.
This is a short story I'd like to see expanded into a novel, even a series. Dieselpunk is cool!
